Compare Guardians of the Galaxy and Honey Trap , in terms of production , distribution , marketing and exhibition.
What are the main differences between the two films and are there any similarities?

Both Guardians of the Galaxy and Honey Trap are both two extremely different movies. Honey trap is based on a real life situation, which is likely to touch hearts due to the story line. And Guardians of the Galaxy is just a movie which has been put out there for entertainment.

Guardians of the Galaxy are about a young guy that was abducted from Earth by the Revengers – group of space pirates. The man finds himself in the middle of some sort of conflict. Both Rocket Raccoon, Drax the Destroyer and Gamra all bring the fight to Ronan Accoster for their own varied personal reasons. They began filming at Shepperton studios. The producers of this movie is Kevin Feige, the director is , James Gunn.

The budget was $170 million.  The film runs for 122 minutes. People which are starring are: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Baustista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace , Michael Rooker , Karen Gillan , Djimon Hounsou , John C. Reilly, Glenn Close , and Benicio del Toro. The fact a lot of well-known actors took part in the film would help the film to become a lot more popular and viewed by people worldwide.

The Guardians of the Galaxy was released on August the 1st 2014 in the United States of America. Expectations for this movie were very high due to the synergy between two major platforms – Walt Disney studios and Marvel studios. The film was released widely across the globe and was released in countries e.g. United Kingdom as well as United States. It was released in 4,080 theatres in America. It was also distributed 2D however it was massively distributed as a 3D film in cinemas.

Furthermore they are also planning to release a digital download in November 2014 and is still scheduled for release on Blu-ray 3D and DVD.  With the Guardians of The Galaxy their techniques of marketing was through the use of social media: Public Facebook Page and a Twitter page for their movie.  Secondly they also marketing the film by making a video game / app for smartphones and tablets, That’s a very smart idea due to technology being a huge part of peoples lives.

Honey Trap is about a young girl named Layla being picked out of the crowd by a eighteen year old rapper name troy. She is swept into romance and that brings popularity, status and sexual awakening, until troy then makes the decision to discard her – she then looses everything. The young girl Layla then changes herself by rebuilding herself in Troy’s image – heartless, hardened player. Despite her just using Troy she then finds her first true friend – Shaun. To sum everything up Layla is forced to choose between the two boys- desire and friendship, between power and connection to another human being. The director of this film is Rebecca Johnson. It’s been stated that they have used locals from Brixton to both cast and record Honey Trap. Honey trap is a low budget film the budget was under £1 million, which was funded through donations. One donation, which they secured twenty thousand pounds from the Walcott Foundation.  They have Dave Raedeker working along side with them as the director of photography who won the best cinematography award at the Sundance film Festival 2012. The music in Honey Trap was produced with a company like “Bucks music Group.”

The movie Honey trap is targeted to people of the age of 25+ (urban adults) and also young people aged 16-15 of both genders, which can relate to the story. The movie could guildline them in a positive way.

They created a profile and started to develop a fan base for Honey Trap.  They also engage with networks, which tends to focus on young people. They looked at possible promotions with Whatsapp, Blackberry Messenger and other free messaging and networking audience used heavily by young people target and urban music blogs and magazines. They even dedicated film pages on Facebook, twitter and tumblr.

Lastly Honey Trap is a real life issue whereas The Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t. So Honey Trap more focuses on triggering emotions from people, which are watching it or going through specific circumstances. Also with Honey trap they employ people from the local area – Brixton.

Distribution

Distribution

Distribution is when , you arrange something or even give something out. For example a film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film- sets release dates of a film. So in order for films to get from the edit houses to the cinema it is done through distribution. The actual process which they have to go through is:
  • Someone thinks of a movie
  • They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
  • A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
  • People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew), this is useful as more ideas will be collaborated.
  • Once the film is completed its sent to the studio.
  • The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
  • The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make, to ensure that none go to waste, or are printed for no apparent reason.
  • The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theatres.
  • The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The prints are sent to the theatres a few days before the opening day.
  • The theatre shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
  • People buy a ticket or tickets and watch the movie.
At the end of the engagement, the theatre sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.

 Distributing films?

Company's or Individuals distribute films for people - the distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either theatrically or for home viewing. The people which produce the films don't distribute the films!

A traditional way of distributing films is

A film festival is a festival which present newest or most popular films. Most film festivals are set up as non-profit organisations. Some take place just over the course of one or two weeks, and some have a week or two of film screenings, then have other events scattered throughout the year. A typical film festival will show a number of films throughout the day. Often film makers , actors , directors and writers will attend. The whole point of film festivals is to broadcast and advertise new films in order to increase the popularity.
