Production

Homework

PRODUCTION

Before a film is made there are stages that need to be followed before hand , these include the story line , the scripts and packaging.
The pitch used needs to be persuasive and appealing in order for investments to be made towards the production for the film.  Once there is funding ready ,  scripts need to be made and then there is casting. Casting is when the crew choose actors/actresses to become characters in the film. Once all characters are hired and everything is set accordingly, the film is ready to be shot. This is part of pre-production, which is all the preparations and precautions taken before a film is published.  After pre production there is the release of the film , soon followed by post production which can include merchandise etc.
Some of Americas most successful producers include Tyler Perry , Ralph Winter and Peter Jackson. Depending on the ownership of the studio , films can make a different range of films.

Furthermore and independent production is when a professional film is being made mostly without the major film studio system.

Distribution

Distribution

Distribution is when , you arrange something or even give something out. For example a film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film- sets release dates of a film. So in order for films to get from the edit houses to the cinema it is done through distribution. The actual process which they have to go through is:
  • Someone thinks of a movie
  • They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
  • A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
  • People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew), this is useful as more ideas will be collaborated.
  • Once the film is completed its sent to the studio.
  • The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
  • The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make, to ensure that none go to waste, or are printed for no apparent reason.
  • The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theatres.
  • The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The prints are sent to the theatres a few days before the opening day.
  • The theatre shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
  • People buy a ticket or tickets and watch the movie.
At the end of the engagement, the theatre sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.

 Distributing films?

Company's or Individuals distribute films for people - the distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either theatrically or for home viewing. The people which produce the films don't distribute the films!

A traditional way of distributing films is

A film festival is a festival which present newest or most popular films. Most film festivals are set up as non-profit organisations. Some take place just over the course of one or two weeks, and some have a week or two of film screenings, then have other events scattered throughout the year. A typical film festival will show a number of films throughout the day. Often film makers , actors , directors and writers will attend. The whole point of film festivals is to broadcast and advertise new films in order to increase the popularity.
